Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Canine Karma different than other training businesses?
At Canine Karma I am able to gear training and behavior modification to your individual needs. I am not only a dog trainer I am also a behaviorist, so I understand the reasoning behind how dogs learn and why they may be exhibiting certain behaviors. I treat the root of the problem, not just place a temporary Band-Aid. I talk dog, and can teach you to do so too.
Canine Karma also has the ability to combine a scientific approach with more homeopathic tools such as the use of essential oils, aromatherapy, and Reiki. (You can read more about what Reiki is on our “services” page). This type of combination of techniques is rare to find and can provide a complete healing for your animal.
What are the benefits of private consultations?
Private training is a highly personalized option. I will be able to evaluate your dog, the behaviors you are experiencing, and suggest a behavior modification plan catered to those specific needs and your individual situation. You will receive a customized plan for you and your dog(s) and lesson times that work around YOUR schedule. After your initial consultation we can always offer follow up visits at any location of your choice, whether it’s your home, the park, or a veterinary office.
What will be included in a service?
This depends on which service you choose. But every client will receive a follow up email after the session so you do not have to remember everything we went over. Sometimes all the information can be a bit overwhelming! Handouts will also be given if applicable. Unlimited access to emailing will also be available for each service.
Will you come to my home?
Yes! This is the benefit of Canine Karma services. I will either come to your home or any place you shall choose (a park for example?). A small travel fee may apply if my travel time is over 30 minutes.
How many sessions will be needed/ Are your services guaranteed?
This depends on each unique situation and what your personal goals are. To guarantee success would be highly unethical and unprofessional. (Be very wary of any trainer that suggests such a guarantee, promising standardized results in "X" number of days. This kind of training will not address your individual situation) each dog is a unique animal, and each dog lives with a unique owner and/or family in a unique environment. I can however, guarantee that I will personally commit to teaching you and your dog(s) how to successfully work towards your goals.
Can my family attend private sessions?
Yes, any and all family members are encouraged to join! At Canine Karma I always want to set your dog up to succeed, so please just make sure young children know to be quiet and respectful.
What are your training techniques?
At Canine Karma we are realistic about our training approach and understand that not every approach is going to work for every family or for every dog. That being said, I positive, reward-based training strategies that are force free. This approach aids your dog in making the “right” decisions in a variety of settings by rewarding what we like and ignoring what we don’t. It’s positive, fun, and effective. Positive reinforcement training in our experience has the most success in changing behaviors and forming stronger bonds between human and canine.
What are "Positive" methods?
Our methods concentrate on rewarding behaviors you like, rather than correcting behaviors you don't like. I would rather be pro-active than RE active. Dogs repeat behaviors that are rewarding to them or that “pay”. However, each dog is motivated by different things. Almost all dogs find food rewarding, but most dogs are also rewarded by attention, physical affection, and toys. The key is to offer those things as a reward for appropriate behavior, to give them a “paycheck” for making a great choice! Now don’t worry, once the dog has complete knowledge of a behavior, we will start to wean off the rewards. So no giant ottomans with legs! But until then, there has to be something in it for them. After all, who would work for free?!
Do you offer phone consultations?
Yes, however in many cases it is not as helpful as a private session would be. But this option is great for people who are out of state or do not have time to set up a session. I do require payment through PayPal prior to the phone call. Once I receive payment I will contact you immediately to set up a time that is best for you.
How do I schedule training?
You can head to my Contact page and either call or email to set up training.
When is payment due?
For private consults the payment will be required at the time of your actual scheduling. For the private obedience course I prefer to get the full payment up front to ensure the next 4 consecutive weeks will be locked in for your time schedule.. For group obedience courses full payment and waiver will need to be received prior to the start date of the class.
